The breakout Summer League star for the 76ers that could nab a starting gig
The Philadelphia 76ers headed to the NBA Summer League with the goal of providing minutes and touches to Ricky Council IV and rookie guard Jared McCain. Council showed promise during the final part of the 2023–24 season, and everyone expected him to be better heading into his sophomore year. During his time in Las Vegas, Council confirmed some of those Sixers' fans hopes.
The 23-year-old combo guard demonstrated his scoring chops and led the team's offense against fellow Summer League athletes. Although he only appeared in 32 games last season, he left his mark largely due to his 37.5% shooting from three and his ability to attack the close-outs effectively. Don't be surprised if Council can take some minutes as a starter on the wing with Philadelphia's limited roster resources in that space.
His scoring ability is a better fit in Philadelphia's second unit, but, as I said, Nick Nurse could try to shuffle the deck between starters and backup options to cover some of the team's roster constructive issues in the wing. Regardless, Council proved that he's up for taking on a bigger role this season, and his skill at stretching the floor and attacking the rim with confidence could make him an ideal starter alongside the 76ers' superstar trio.
Aside from deciding on starting or benching a player, Philadelphia is entering the year as one of the best teams in the NBA in a championship or bust season. Nick Nurse will need to use every ounce of the available talent on the roster, and keeping players involved in the rotation will be a huge part of their road to success.
