The Philadelphia 76ers are widely considered to be buyers in the trade market, but with their bevy of expiring contracts, they should also be deemed as potentially huge sellers ahead of the trade deadline.
In fact, one of those players, Tobias Harris, is actually getting some trade interest from other teams — quite a surprising development given that the veteran forward is mostly seen as a means, not necessarily an end, in deal talks.
NBA Rumors: Surprising team eyeing trade for 76ers forward Tobias Harris
The Athletic’s Shams Charania bared that the Detroit Pistons are in the market for starting-caliber power forwards. While they may just hold out and pursue guys outright in free agency next year, the franchise appears headed to turning their fate around fast, as they are currently mired in an NBA record-tying 27-game losing streak.
Harris was named as one of the players Detroit’s brass is keeping an eye on. He’s on the final leg of his mammoth five-year contract. Despite being among the most overpaid players in the league for quite some time now, the veteran forward has remained productive this season, currently logging 17.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game on 51.1 percent shooting as the 76ers’ nominal third option on offense.
Conventionally speaking, it makes more sense for the Pistons to simply continue rebuilding and racking up future-oriented assets, but the jury has never been harder d on the franchise right now, which has seen little meaningful success since its brilliant run in the 2000s.
Potential threats about relocation and some of their players growing tired of seeming disconnect within the front office also give the franchise a lot of pressure to start making bold changes, even if that requires going after players who may not necessarily contribute to long-term success.
