With the trade deadline finally over, the Philadelphia 76ers can now look forward to playing the season out — a tall task amid a schedule that’s starting to become less forgiving and Joel Embiid being out for the foreseeable future due to injury.

That being said, the front office still has one avenue to tread to improve the roster — the buyout market. While not as lucrative as the recently closed trade market, this year’s cast of players expected to be bought out by their respective teams is actually a talented one, giving Philly a big opportunity to snag a player for cheap to add to their late-season push.

Now, it appears that one prime candidate to be bought out is inching closer to being a Sixer.

Kyle Lowry, one of the biggest fish to reel in the buyout market, is guaranteed to be bought out by the Hornets after no trade materialized before the deadline. And the league-wide expectation if for the former All-Star to eventually sign with the 76ers.

According to John Hollinger of The Athletic, Lowry landing in Philadelphia and reuniting with Daryl Morey, his GM in his early Houston days, and Nick Nurse, who led them to a championship in Toronto in 2019, “seems all but a foregone conclusion at this point”.

The 76ers aren’t the only team venturing into the Lowry market with the Los Angeles Lakers also ailing and needing help in point guard play, but the latter has been linked recently to Spencer Dinwiddie. Should they snag him, Philly should be the only team in contention for the veteran.

Lowry is expected to fortify a 76ers backcourt that just traded two backcourt players in addition to their usual starters, De’Anthony Melton and Tyrese Maxey, suffering from nagging injuries. He’ll be a nice facilitator off the bench and his championship pedigree will be much welcomed as they gear up for a potentially long playoff run if Embiid returns.
