76ers News: Philly hinted at as potential destination for superstar forward

The Philadelphia 76ers made a slew of moves as of late, and while their roster isn’t quite set yet, absolutely no one would be jotting them down for a slated death if they fail to do so given the fact that they will most likely be the biggest player in the offseason.

Even in a win-now season, one that appears to be unfazed by Joel Embiid’s pretty hefty inury-related absence, the 76ers have been doing everything in their power to collect assets and talent while maintaining utmost financial flexibility. This is easily a sign that the front office will not be afraid to go all-out this summer and break the bank if needed.

Now, it seems that there could be a possible linkage between Philly and one superstar everyone will — and should — be thrilled about.

76ers hinted at as a potential landing spot for LeBron James

According to Marc Stein in his latest Substack piece (subscription required), there’s a realistic chance that LeBron James opts out of his contract with the Lakers and explore signing with another team, sepcifically one that will have drafted his son, Bronny James, by then.

"I know of at least two teams on the NBA map that believe LeBron James would consider signing with them at far less than $51.4 million if Bronny James is on the roster. There might be more."

Virtually no [contending] team in the NBA would be able to afford James at his current salary range, but if he lowers his asking price for the prospect of playing with his son — which he has long said was a goal of his — the 76ers could have a fighting chance.

Philly has a projected cap space of $76.8 million this offseason, and while the bulk of that would be sequestered for Tyrese Maxey’s extension, the team will still be left with enough money to throw at a third star.

Should the stars align, and the 76ers do beat out other teams in drafting Bronny, a scenario wherre James follows suit isn’t a pipe dream. LeBron already had Philadelphia on the shortlist of teams he was interested in signing with back in 2018, and he should have zero qualms about relocating to the city especially if it means forging a histroic team-up with his eldest.

At this point in time, the Philadelphia 76ers cannot afford to spend a lot of energy on this hypothetical, especially because the Lakers will exhaust every option to ensure that one of the greatest players of all-time stays in LA. That being said, LeBron James in Philly may be unlikely, but it definitely isn’t impossible.
