3 Surprising playoff standouts the 76ers should pursue this offseason
3 Surprising playoff standouts the 76ers should pursue in free agency
3. Obi Toppin
While pigeonholed in a much lesser role compared to the other names on this list, Obi Toppin has quietly had a strong initial season and Indiana — one that has managed to percolate into the postseason. In limited minutes (a tad above 18 per outing), Toppin is still logging a double-digit scoring average, flashing his untapped potential as a reliable play finisher and outright scorer.
Toppin has been a fantastic addition to the Pacers, easily finishing the year as one of the most efficient scorers in the league to the tune of a 57.3 field goal percentage which includes a remarkable 40.3 percent clip from downtown. However, while that has been a massive asset for Indiana’s league-leading bench, it also puts them in a tough dilemma with the forward entering free agency since they have a bit of a logjam in the frontcourt.
Should Indiana’s plate become too much for them to handle, the 76ers should swoop in and make a bid for Toppin. His play style profiles as a perfect fit next to Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, and his interchangability (in account of his minutes at both forward positions and as a small-ball center this season) is fully within the ken of the Nick Nurse archetype.
