Trades, trades, trades. Most of the trade chatter these days are contrived proposals, but the frequency of such is simply a showing of how much teams are aiming for a turnover this offseason. That rings a lot louder for the Philadelphia 76ers, a franchise widely expected to undergo a drastic change this summer thanks to the ever-active trade market.

The 76ers are more likely to use free agency as a more proactive gauntlet to push them toward their much-desired roster upgrades, but there are arguably more intriguing options in the trade market. The upcoming pool of free agents boasts some promise, but it is too top-heavy and shallow at the middle to reliably count on as a lone device.

Look for the 76ers to try and trade for a high-end role player

Most trade proposals conjured by fans and pundits alike are founded on the linkages between Philly and the many stars projected to be available in some way. However, the 76ers have the machinations to hunt for that third star outright in the open market, and it’s also conceivable to think that the front office won’t rule out plunging neck-deep into the trading tables with a more modest acquisition in mind.

Having said that, there are a bunch of role players who should be available for plucking via trade with a handful of teams eyeing to retool their roster or even commence a full-blown rebuild. Here is one trade proposal that has Philadelphia making a deal for arguably the best role player available right now.

76ers trade for Alex Caruso in this harmless proposal

In this trade proposal from Bleacher Report, the Philadelphia 76ers acquire veteran guard Alex Caruso from the Chicago Bulls for a 2026 first-round pick (the worst between the Thunder, Rockets, and Clippers), and this year’s second-round pick originally owed by Chicago to Philly in what’s essentially a recoup.

Caruso, who was once again named to the All-Defensive Team this season, has long been a hot commodity for win-now teams for quite some time now. Chicago has been steadfast in holding down the horses, opting to keep him despite potential and seemingly willing overpays, but one has to wonder about how much longer the Bulls brass intends to keep its act.

The truth is, there is simply no viable path for Chicago to be a playoff contender the way they’re currently constructed. It’s no secret that Bulls fans have been clamoring for a tear-down since last season, and if they come to their senses, they should eventually turn into big sellers this offseason. Should the 76ers bite? Let’s zoom in on this deal a bit more.

Why the 76ers should trade for Alex Caruso

Alex Caruso has a pretty straightforward offering to the game of basketball: defense. Easily one of the league’s best defenders regardless of position from both the eye test and a numbers standpoint, his point-preventing prowess has basically been his biggest selling point for teams, a calling card of his that’s potent enough to make them willing to overpay.

In this proposed trade framework though, the 76ers don’t seem to be slated for a questionable largesse. A first-round pick has long been the perceived ballpark figure to kickstart discussions with the Bulls for Caruso, and sweetening the pot with a second-round selection that was Chicago’s to begin with barely casts a scratch.

Beyond his player sketch and the prognosticated (again, prognosticated) ease to acquire him though, Caruso makes too much sense for the 76ers. The 30-year-old is arguably the best, true role player in the NBA, and his fit next to Tyrese Maxey and within the team’s dynamic is virtually spotless.

Aside from his well-documented mastery of defense, Caruso is a functional offensive retrofit who should be able to thrive as a last resort. He’s a career 38 percent three-point shooter, and his 3.5 assists per game average this season despite playing next to ball-dominant options hints at his quick decision-making and overall efficiency as a secondary playmaker.

Can the 76ers win the Caruso sweepstakes, though?

In a war of assets and corporate bootlicking, Philadelphia undoubtedly has what it takes to prompt Chicago into pulling it aside for a winner’s briefer. But let’s be real — the proposed trade assumes that the Bulls are an incompetent collective, and that the 76ers would be able to easily pull off a quick heist.

Frankly, Alex Caruso’s on-paper equivalent in a trade is probably a first-round pick, but sweepstakes almost never operate off of the tenor of surface values. There is a pretty high demand for Caruso’s services, and there were already a lot of chatters about teams being willing to pay above market value to secure him.

The veteran guard’s skill set is not only in-demand; it’s also pretty moldable and easy to integrate on any configuration. Teams, especially those under win-now mandates, would undoubtedly try to get into the bidding war for an elite role player like Caruso who has already shown championship mettle.

Thus, while the 76ers can definitely win the Alex Caruso sweepstakes, the proposed offer from their side is extremely unlikely to become the winning bid. Philadelphia will have to come up with a more appealing offer in a hypothetical scenario to lure Chicago into dishing out a sweet “yes”.
