The Philadelphia 76ers were among the more active teams at the NBA trade deadline. They brought in Buddy Hield and Cam Payne and shipped out Marcus Morris Sr., Furkan Korkmaz, Patrick Beverly, and Jaden Springer. The Sixers were not done making moves though, and signed Kyle Lowry following his buyout from the Charlotte Hornets
Lowry is a Philadelphia native, having been born and raised in the City of Brotherly Love. He played high school ball locally at Cardinal Dougherty and then went to Villanova for college where he would eventually have his number retired.
Following a successful college career, Lowry took a couple of years to find his footing and eventually settled in Toronto. As a member of the Raptors from 2012-2021, he became a 6-time consecutive All-Star (years 2015-2020) and capped off 2019 with an NBA Championship alongside Kawhi Leonard. The coach of that Championship team was none other than Nick Nurse.
This leads us to Lowry's return to Philadelphia. The 37-year-old guard is reuniting with his former coach and finally playing for his hometown Sixers, a dream that Lowry has stated publically in the past. What the Sixers can expect from Lowry is yet to be seen, however, he is joining a crowded backcourt, where Tyrese Maxey's backup will be a competition between Lowry and Payne.
Is Kyle Lowry playing tonight against the Miami Heat?
Following Lowry's signing with the Sixers, many are wondering when he will make his debut for the team. The Sixers face his former team, the Miami Heat tonight, which seems like a perfect time for him to step on the court. There has to be some revenge on his mind after the Heat traded him to Charlotte for Terry Rozier in January.
Unfortunately, Sixers fans will have to wait to see Lowry at the Wells Fargo Center. He will not play tonight against the Heat and is reportedly ramping up to be ready to play for the team following the NBA All-Star weekend. This is probably the best decision for both Lowry and the franchise as the team is working through a number of different lineups with the numerous injuries on the roster. Fans can likely expect to see Lowry in a Sixers uniform late next week at the earliest.
