The Philadelphia 76ers turned in a hell of an offseason. Having finally snagged that elusive third star they’ve been coveting for a while and signing quality role players to tremendous bargains, the franchise is now in a much better position to contend for the championship in the upcoming season.
While the jury is largely heaping praises toward the 76ers’ move this summer, it seems like a few don’t feel the same way thanks to the team pouring nearly all its resources into signing one particular player, a move they are already forecasting as a reason for regret in the foreseeable future.
Could the 76ers regret signing Paul George to a max deal?
As expected, the 76ers were only able to sign George to the tune of a max contract, a just, yet risky proposition for a 34-year-old star who is likely going to decline soon. Having said that, will the nine-time All-Star regress to the extent that will prompt the franchise into a state of regret?
George, despite lower counting numbers last season, posted career-highs across the board in all shooting categories, a feat that only reinforces his profile as the perfect third star to install next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
Most naysayers about Philly snagging George are of the peanut gallery, foisting a negative outlook purely off the fact that the front office seemingly handcuffed itself into their current nucleus for the next four years. Is that really a bad idea, though?
A tirumvirate of Embiid, Maxey, and George not only reeks of elite talent, but also touts a synergistic blend that should only age well as all of them coexist within a competitive dynamic, especially under a master tactician like Nick Nurse.
Hence, talks about the 76ers regretting signing George are too preposterous, especially at this juncture. Hopefully, the All-Star manages to help the team silence the doubters, starting next season.
