While it’s unlikely fans will see the Philadelphia 76ers’ star trio of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George in action throughout training camp and preseason, there are still interesting subplots to monitor.

This stage of the season serves as an opportunity for the bottom half of Philadelphia's roster to audition for a spot in the rotation or fight for their place on the team. Justin Edwards, Johni Broome, and Hunter Sallis have unique chances to prove their worth.

Watch out for Edwards

Edwards was one of the 76ers’ few silver linings last season. He averaged 10.1 points per game on 55.9% true-shooting and 3.4 rebounds in 44 contests. Edwards played both ends – serving as a steady spot-up shooter and point-of-attack defender. He also provided glimpses of three-level shot creation and is primed to be a figure in Philadelphia's rotation.

As a sign of good faith, the 76ers signed him to a three-year, $7 million contract on June 27th and he’s already showing signs of year-two development.

Edwards revealed during Media Day on Friday that he bulked up to around 215 pounds after being listed at 203 in his rookie campaign. The Philadelphia native also said he has more confidence with a year of NBA experience under his belt.

With more muscle, Edwards may have an easier time creating separation from his defender off the dribble and provide him with adequate strength to guard larger front-court players.

Where will Broome wind up?

While Edwards knows his role, Broome’s is less clear. Philadelphia has a great need for stability at power forward and backup center, both of which the 35th overall pick could contribute to.

Broome stated on Media Day that he defended Embiid in the 76ers’ unofficial practice session. This could indicate that Broome will primarily play center, but anything is possible. Coaches tend to experiment with a variety of lineups and ideas throughout training camp.

It's more likely the Auburn product will have a mix of power forward and center minutes. Broome’s athleticism and floor-spacing ability will likely dictate where he fits in most seamlessly. He’ll have the preseason to showcase his Jaylin Williams-esque skill-set that many have questioned.

Sallis may get some looks

Sallis won’t have a pathway to carve out a legitimate role as Edwards and Broome do, but he’s worth monitoring. Philadelphia has suddenly become thin at guard between Jared McCain’s injury unavailability and Quentin Grimes holding out, which opens reserve minutes for the likes of Sallis.

Given the nature of the preseason, Sallis likely would've gotten run anyway. However, with Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, and Kyle Lowry likely being managed to some level, Sallis could have extended opportunity sans McCain and Grimes.

The undrafted signee had an underwhelming Summer League campaign – averaging just 5.8 points per game on 25.6% shooting from the field. Sallis has a chance to redeem himself and solidify his spot amongst the 76ers’ two-way players.
