Quentin Grimes better hope the latest 76ers trade rumors don’t come true

This would not be ideal for the 76ers guard.

The Philadelphia 76ers have been relatively quiet so far when it comes to the rumor mill. With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, they have not really been solidly linked to any specific player out there at this juncture. However, the latest rumor points to the front office eyeing a rotational upgrade, which should actually make someone like Quentin Grimes antsy.

Grimes, who is on an expiring contract and is set to re-enter the free agency market this year after failing to secure a handsome pay raise last summer, could very well be on the trading block despite playing a key role for the 76ers this season. While getting shipped will not change his condition as an impending free agent, the prospect of playing elsewhere right could potentially be risky for him. Here’s why.

The 25-year-old is currently in an ideal role with the 76ers. While his numbers are down compared to last season, part and parcel behind that reduced production is his more streamlined role for the team. Still, his value should be good enough for him to secure a contract in the $16 to 20 range. That could change if he suits up for another team.

Quentin Grimes better hope the 76ers do not trade him before the deadline

Grimes has hit a wall a few weeks ago, but he should remain in the running for Sixth Man of the Year. He is, without a doubt, a vital piece of the rotation, providing a constant supply of three-point shooting and secondary scoring to complement the team’s core guys.

If Grimes gets dealt for an upgrade (or consolidated with other players for a high-end starter), he might not be able to find a more secure role than the one he is currently enjoying in Philly. That will most certainly affect the way he is valued around the league, especially with front offices getting compelled the most by proximate production.

Now, why would the 76ers even think of trading him? Well, he still has his faults, and the league is not exactly lacking in high-end role players at the guard positions. Again, the front offices has a way to get a real upgrade in the backcourt, something which they could put near the top of their whiteboard due to the underwhelming play of Jared McCain.

Quentin Grimes has been rock-solid for the 76ers for the most part, where he is slotted in a perfect role. As such, he better hope that he ends the season with the franchise, lest he risks seeing his market value decline.
