The 76ers brought in a lot of new faces during the offseason, but of course, that also means that the front office parted ways with some key players from last season, such as Quentin Grimes. He signed a considerably generous deal with the Lakers over the summer, but to start the season, he has noticeably struggled from beyond the arc –– something which Philly is very familiar with after encountering the same issue with him in their previous campaign.
Through Los Angeles' first seven games, Grimes has averaged just 8.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per outing in nearly 27 minutes a night while shooting just 25 percent from three-point territory. While the Lakers have remained an elite scoring squad thanks to Luka Doncic, Grimes' poor shooting simply cannot go on given how prominent a role he holds for their squad.
Quentin Grimes is giving the Lakers a problem the 76ers are familiar with
Grimes is a good all-around player who can easily get hot on the scoring end, but the 76ers did not exactly enjoy an efficient shooting season from him in 2025-26. Last season, he shot just 33.4 percent from beyond the arc, which is definitely a letdown given how much the team relied on him to space the floor and hit shots from deep.
The Lakers brought him in to bring reliable secondary scoring and playmaking as well as three-point shooting, but they have not gotten those from him for the most part. Aside from his declining scoring average, his off-ball utility has taken a hit because his three-point shooting has been pretty subpar.
Right now, Grimes has the lowest three-point shooting percentage among the Lakers' regulars. As someone who receives heavy minutes on a nightly basis despite operating off the bench, that could end up changing his role if his shooting issues are unresolved.
The Lakers have been elite on offense, but they really do not have any other choice but to be a high-octane scoring squad. After all, their defense pales in comparison, and any kind of hole on their offensive repertoire could very well adversely affect their potency on that end. Right now, Grimes' shooting from deep is one major crevice in their scoring attack.
The 76ers certainly do not miss Grimes given their sterling start to the season, and that sentiment will only grow stronger if he keeps misfiring from deep for the Lakers in an even worse way than what Philly encountered in their previous campaign.
