The Philadelphia 76ers being a part of the LeBron James bidding war was made possible by their blazing shot at winning the championship next season. However, what made them win the vaunted sweepstakes for the superstar is actually more than just the mere prospect of winning his fifth ring –– the chance to cement himself in league history as the first player ever to win a championship with four different NBA franchises.
While there are numerous factors why James decided to go to Philly, the 76ers simply offered the best shot for him to clinch that elusive achievement –– something that has never been accomplished before in the NBA. Pundits believe such an accolade was the primary driving force behind his stunning choice.
LeBron went to the 76ers for a reason bigger than just another ring
Sure, the fact that James did not stay with one franchise throughout his career, unlike legends like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan, is tossed around as one of the biggest arguments against him being reckoned as the GOAT. However, people would be remiss to acknowledge the fact that winning a title with four different franchises is also quite the feat.
Situations vary between franchises, and being a part –– heck, even the pilot in LeBron's case –– of multiple, different situations is very difficult. Stability is a huge factor in winning multiple chips with a single franchise, and that is simply a lot more impressive when playing for different ones, especially in today's league, where parity is more prevalent and repeat titles are rarer.
The 76ers do have the tools to make LeBron's quest for history a reality. Not only did the team manage to pull off a blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown this offseason, but the front office also signed a slew of well-fitting players to surround their star-studded nucleus which still features holdovers in Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe.
Now, the East will not be a cakewalk, especially with the defending champs coming from their conference. Still, the 76ers are adding James and Brown to a core which got the team to a second-round finish last season, so there is indeed every reason to believe that they can get to the Finals and clinch the title.
Hopefully, LeBron and the 76ers can help each other reach their goals next season. For Philly, that means snapping a championship drought that has lasted for more than four decades. For the King, it is the chance to cement himself in a territory never seen before.
