To suggest that Daryl Morey is currently the flavor of the month in the City of Philadelphia would be a blatant lie. The Philadelphia 76ers' general manager has strung together a set of questionable decisions that have left a sour taste in the mouths of Sixers fans. Nevertheless, Morey continues to hit on low-cost talent, and MarJon Beauchamp is the latest two-way gem pushing for a full-time roster spot.
As a general manager, if you are going to push against the majority and make decisions that are going to anger a fan base that, quite frankly, does not need much reason to become emotional, then these choices must work out at some stage. Morey has regularly failed to meet this standard. Just ask Jared McCain, who is now thriving with the Oklahoma City Thunder in a system that complements his sharpshooting attributes.
However, in the midst of all of the luxury tax ducking, Morey's eye for cheaper players who can have a positive effect on the 76ers does deserve more credit.
Beauchamp is the latest in a long list of two-way talent for Philadelphia
In isolation, this has been a fantastic season to be a two-way player for the 76ers. Already this year, Dominick Barlow and Jabari Walker have impressed on such a level that they were awarded permanent contracts with the franchise. Additionally, Barlow has cemented his place in the starting lineup and has been a consistent contributor to Philadelphia's success. The 22-year-old has averaged 8.2 points and 4.7 rebounds, while shooting 53.8% from the floor.
MarJon Beauchamp is showing that he can follow in his peers' footsteps and fight for a permanent spot on the roster for the 2026-27 campaign -- whether that be in Philadelphia or with another franchise is a different conversation. For now, the former Milwaukee Bucks first-round pick is boosting a depleted 76ers roster.
During Philadelphia's most recent 96-124 thrashing by the Denver Nuggets, Beauchamp turned in a spirited display. The 25-year-old scored 16 points while hitting four of his eight shots from three-point range.
A performance of this nature allowed Beauchamp to exhibit the exact traits that the Sixers have been crying out for for several years -- a forward who is willing to sit on the perimeter and finish shots as the ball is kicked out to him.
Most importantly, this showing was far from an anomaly in Beauchamp's career with the 76ers. In seven games, he has recorded 10+ points on three occasions, with a season-high 17 points coming in a 131-109 defeat to the high-flying Detroit Pistons.
Daryl Morey deservedly receives substantial criticism for his tenure with the Philadelphia 76ers; however, it cannot be denied that he is gaining an impressive reputation for unearthing diamonds in the rough. Is this an approach that wins a franchise championship? Absolutely not. But Sixers owner Josh Harris is surely pleased to see roster spots filled by effective, low-cost alternatives.
