Following their most recent blunder, the Philadelphia 76ers now officially own the worst record in the NBA. Their downwards spiral continues, and at this point, there is not a lot of reason to believe they can shift the tide drastically to silence their doubters. Put simply, the team is facing an alarming crisis.
From Paul George re-injuring his knee, the team’s stars not really playing up to par in comparison to their performance from last season and the somehow persistent disappointments on the part of the coaching staff, the 76ers already have a lot of in-house hurdles to clear before they even get to face their external obstacles — and that is only to reach a breakeven point from their puny win-loss card.
Front and center in recent days, however, has been the recent players-only meeting that has become a huge talking point not only to 76ers circles, but around the league. The team’s pile of losses, which prompted the same, has only exacerbated the flavor around what had transpired — a fact bemoaned by Joel Embiid, the reported subject of the wholesome confab.
76ers could face more havoc with rumored Joel Embiid plan
That the players-only meeting turned out to be a pretty well-documented one quickly became a point of irritation for Embiid. In fact, people close to the 76ers superstar seem to think that he wants to find out who the “snitch” is on the team’s locker room, at least according to Jake Fischer, one of the more reliable sources out there.
When ESPN reported details on Tuesday morning, from inside the 76ers' team meeting following Monday night's blown lead in Miami, one league figure close to Philadelphia's All-Star center told me: ‘Joel is going to be furious.’ And that Embiid was going to try and find the Sixers’ supposed snitch.
The very fact that Embiid is seemingly getting some hint — if not kicking the tires himself on this end — that the snitch is some individual inside the locker room is pretty telling of some disparage within the team.
Sure, it could very well be the media with all their shenanigans around the squad so far this season, but this is a players-only meeting we are talking about. The odds of that being the case are close to nil.
Should Embiid push through with this reported side quest, the 76ers will have another distraction to be mindful of as they aim to mount a comeback in the standings. That clearly does not bode well for the team’s chemistry either, which has already been evidently missing despite their embarrassment of riches on the talent department.
Moving forward, the Philadelphia 76ers have to be more proactive in restoring order by suppressing what they should, lest they risk having their best player take matters into his own hands when he should only be concerned about playing his hearts out.
