Jared McCain has played 37 games in his NBA career and tore his meniscus and UCL between the first 23 and the most recent 14. So there are multiple reasons McCain's inconsistent production in year two (he's shooting 38 percent from the field right now) are no cause for concern.
It feels like a lifetime ago that the Sixers drafted McCain because of the chaos that has ensued since then, so it's easy to forget that he's missed more games than he's played in his NBA tenure. He should still be allowed to hit the "rookie wall," which usually comes around halfway through a player's first season — which McCain basically is right now.
The second reason we should all take some deep breaths (aside from meditation being healthy in general) is that McCain has dealt with two injuries, and both of them were serious. A torn meniscus and a torn UCL in a thumb will both throw a wrench into a player's production. Even with both injuries recovered, McCain needing to find his shot again is totally normal. He's been a top-tier shooter his entire life, so a minor slump after two real injuries is clearly nothing to fret about.
Jared McCain is essentially still a rookie in a crowded backcourt
And finally — the Sixers don't need McCain to find his stride immediately. It's okay if he takes some time to re-acclimate because Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Quentin Grimes are doing a commendable job holding things down.
McCain is still a part of the Sixers' longterm plans. With Grimes' contract expiring after this year, he seems like the obvious odd man out in this Philly quartet, and that will open up plenty more minutes and shots for McCain.
In the meantime, it's okay that his production is limited. It's a good thing the Sixers don't need a 21 year-old to rush back to full strength, and it's probably the best thing for his development that he can work his way back into a rotation that already has a strong cast of guards.
I know we all wanted McCain to return and immediately set the world on fire again, but that was never realistic. He's played basically half of an NBA season. There's no reason for panic. Well, there's plenty of reason for panic, actually, but not regarding Jared McCain. Just about, like, everything else in the world. Those things you can panic about. Still try the deep breaths, though.
