Wow. Did anybody see that coming? Jaylen Brown is now a Philadelphia 76er. Mike Gansey is setting an incredibly high bar for himself during the opening weeks as the Sixers' president of basketball operations. Not only does this trade with the Boston Celtics finally remove Paul George's awful contract from the wage bill, but it replaces it with a star who knows what it takes to win a title.

Jaylen Brown knows what it takes to be a champion

For a number of years, the Philadelphia 76ers' fan base has had to settle for what-ifs and maybes in pursuit of reaching the NBA promised land. Moments in time, a rotten injury record, and frankly a lack of know-how have limited the Sixers to a toxic cycle of mediocrity -- until now.

The 76ers have acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks. George was a bona fide superstar with a reputation for making big plays in big moments, yet despite all his basketball knowledge, there is one thing he didn't bring to the table in Philadelphia: a championship resume.

Brown is not just a champion; he's a Finals MVP, a mentality monster, and, most importantly, a player who will never quit on his team, even in the toughest moments. This is a star who has been consistently incredible during his time in Boston, whether that was as a primary or secondary offensive option.

Throughout the 2025-26 season, the 29-year-old led the Celtics to the second seed in the absence of Jayson Tatum when few believed it to be possible. Brown averaged a career-high 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, while shooting 47.7 percent from the floor and 34.7 from deep.

Brown lands in Philadelphia at the perfect time

You could ask 100 76ers fans what the main issue is with the current roster, and 98 of them would give you the same answer: squad depth. Given the state of Philadelphia's financial situation, Mike Gansey needed to find players who could play multiple positions.

Jaylen Brown is not just a versatile player who thrives in one position while adequately filling other gaps when required; in each role he is asked to play, he does so expertly. Brown will most likely be a like-for-like replacement for Paul George, but his ability to run the offense will finally alleviate the unsustainable burden placed on Tyrese Maxey's shoulders in recent times.

Additionally, while George showed during the 76ers' postseason campaign -- most notably against the Celtics -- he can still light up a team from 3-point range when necessary. However, he failed to show the explosive spark that made him such a dangerous prospect in his younger years; Brown does not have this problem. On both sides of the ball, Jaylen Brown possesses a relentless streak that can rally a crowd and swing the momentum in his team's favor.

Just as it appeared that Paul George was finally getting accustomed to his life as a third option in Philadelphia, Mike Gansey has shipped him out the door. Even though his performances were improving, Jaylen Brown is an entirely different animal. His championship experience, versatility, and two-way explosiveness will catapult the 76ers into NBA Finals contention.
