Following their first loss of the 2026-2027 NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers took a day off and returned to practice to prepare for their upcoming road game against the Indiana Pacers.
There were some positive injury updates to come out of the session, including the return of VJ Edgecombe and the seemingly upgraded Tacko Fall. After spending the first week of the regular season doing individual work with the Sixers, Fall was considered to be a full participant at practice on Tuesday afternoon.
That's a positive development for the Sixers, who are lacking depth at the center position.
Will Tacko Fall play against the Pacers?
Fall isn’t ready to return to action just yet. When the Sixers revealed their injury report, the big man was listed as out. Fortunately, the Sixers removed Joel Embiid from the injury report, after he sat out the previous game. However, Fall and Jabari Walker will continue to leave the 76ers’ depth thin
Fall joined the Sixers as an Exhibit 10 signing before training camp. Joining the offseason roster with a handful of non-guaranteed players, Fall knew he was competing for the team's final two-way slot.
Although Fall didn't log a single minute during the preseason, due to his setback, which occurred early on in training camp, the Sixers simply needed another center to have around. They can't add a 15th player until December. In addition, Ariel Hukporti suffered an Achilles injury, which will take him off the court for the entire 2026-2027 NBA season.
Using the final two-way slot on a center made plenty of sense. Whether Fall is the right candidate or not is unclear. The Sixers haven't seen him in practice action much, and his next game with the team will be his first.
The 30-year-old has NBA experience, but it's been a while since he took the court outside of an international stage. An 11-game run with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2021-2022 was Fall's last showing in the league. He saw the court for just 5.4 minutes per game during that time.
Before getting to Cleveland, Fall played for the Boston Celtics. His sophomore effort in 2020-2021 included a 19-game run with an average of 7.2 minutes per game. He produced averages of 2.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game during that time.
After spending some time in the NBA G League, the Chinese Basketball Association, and the National Basketball League (New Zealand Breakers), Fall made his way back to the NBA, with hopes of splitting time between the Sixers and the Delaware Blue Coats. Now that he's getting healthy again, Fall could end up being an emergency center for the Sixers, who have been relying on a committee behind Joel Embiid.
