This knock against LeBron James joining 76ers falls flat

Are the 76ers truly a bad fit for LeBron James?

LeBron James' decision to keep his next team reveal out of the spotlight for over two weeks has sparked a lot of discussion about the Philadelphia 76ers.

Since the Sixers are very much in the running for LeBron, the star forward's fit in the lineup is a recurring talking point among insiders and analysts.

ESPN's Ramona Shelburne recently jumped on a Cleveland-based radio station for her company to discuss the latest on LeBron. As far as intel goes, there wasn't anything that we don't already know. LeBron's next landing spot is still a mystery.

But when Shelburne began talking purely about fit, there was a theory worth pushing back on from a Sixers perspective.

"Somebody talked me into Miami," Shelburne explained. "I go, 'Oh, yeah, I guess I could see that.' From a basketball fit, the Heat is not a bad fit. Philly, I don't get that at all. I think there's just too many guys there that... Yeah, I don't think the Embiid-LeBron thing would work well."

Are you sure about that?

Cue the Tim Robinson meme.

It's hard to push back on any take that simply claims LeBron James can share the court with anyone. The former MVP is versatile and has a high IQ, making him adjustable in any situation.

Still, think about the comparison of spacing between these two lineups: Bam Adebayo, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron, and two of either Davion Mitchell, Tim Hardaway Jr., or Andrew Wiggins.

Then there is Joel Embiid, LeBron, Jaylen Brown, VJ Edgecombe, and Tyrese Maxey.

In today's NBA, the second option seems to fit like a glove.

As far as "too many guys go," it's a valid concern. The "super team" era has produced some massive flops. But when it comes to the successful ones, what was the X-factor? LeBron James.

The Miami Heat won with a lot of guys. The Cleveland Cavaliers did the same. And if you count the 2019-2020 Lakers as a super team, then add another one to the list.

If you don't, then think about LeBron James' fit playing with that frontcourt in LA, as they rolled out Anthony Davis and JaVale McGee as the starting bigs for the year. Davis and Embiid are similar in that they are star scorers, stretch bigs, solid defenders, and struggle with injuries.

Not only did James and Davis win it all together, but LeBron would be more than open to getting back on the same roster.

I'm not saying the Sixers are the best fit for LeBron this year. Every team has its case. However, if it's a debate about pure fit between the Sixers and the Heat, that initial take feels off.
