If you want to win MVP in the NBA, you have to rack up some seasonal awards. We're through just one week of the 2026-2027 NBA season, and Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is off to quite a start.

With four games in the bag, Maxey was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week. He shares the spotlight with the Memphis Grizzlies standout, Ty Jerome.

Tyrese Maxey's first week of action

The Sixers opened up the week with a big game against the New York Knicks. Maxey checked in for nearly 40 minutes of action and shot 47.4% from the field. He led the way for the Sixers with 28 points, along with five assists, four rebounds, three steals, and three blocks.

When the Sixers met with the Cleveland Cavaliers two nights later, Maxey played for 41 minutes. He led the 76ers in scoring as they came back from a 29-point deficit. The two-time All-Star put up 32 points, while shooting 52.2% from the field. Maxey also tacked on six assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

Over the weekend, the Sixers went through their first back-to-back action of the season. The 76ers split it with a win against the Milwaukee Bucks before losing to the Detroit Pistons. Against the Bucks, Maxey struggled with his efficiency from the field, but had his strongest three-point shooting night of the season so far. Maxey finished the game with 26 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

When the 76ers closed out the back-to-back set on Sunday night, Maxey played in 33 minutes of action. He shot 11-for-24 from the field, draining 29 points. He also had five rebounds, four assists, three steals, and one block. Although Maxey kept up with his numbers, the 76ers dropped their first game of the season against the Pistons, losing 106-93.

Overall, Maxey averaged 28.8 points per game, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, with a 3-1 team record.

Where does Maxey have to improve?

The veteran guard's three-point shooting has been stellar throughout his career, after a slow start. While Maxey was red-hot from three in years two and three, averaging over 42% in each season, he had a slight regression over time, as the volume started nearing double digits.

Last season, Maxey bounced back and averaged 36.7% from deep on 8.6 attempts per game, after making 33.7% of his threes on 9.2 attempts per game. So far this season, Maxey has attempted 7.5 threes per game, hitting on 30.0%. If he can sharpen those numbers once again, Maxey will surely be one of the top scorers again this season, even with the presence of more stars in the lineup.
