A lot needs to go right for the Philadelphia 76ers to transform into true championship contenders next season. Much of that has to do with the uncertain health of Joel Embiid, but many other factors could raise their ceiling. During his courtside interview with Katie George of ESPN, Tyrese Maxey hinted at two developments that could catapult Philadelphia from playoff contention to a legitimate threat.
"Right now we're just names on a paper. We got to go out there and show the world what we can do. And not just the world, show it to ourselves."

Maxey still has levels he can take it
Throughout his five seasons, Maxey has greatly evolved from the player Philadelphia took with the 21st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Whether it was becoming a multi-faceted perimeter shooter or making improved reads out of pick-and-rolls, he has taken the necessary steps to form into an all-star caliber player. However, Maxey himself wants to improve in two key categories heading into next season – playmaking and off-ball movement.
Maxey has taken great steps as a playmaker, especially when making the correct read when collapsing the defense. However, there is still another level he can reach, especially since he’ll be one of Philadelphia’s offensive cogs. Oftentimes, Maxey makes basic reads off the dribble when there’s a deeper advantage to be created. If he can execute more adventurous skip passes by having more patience at the rim, this could truly maximize the 76ers’ offense.
As far as off-ball impact, Maxey hasn’t played alongside a guard that could lessen his on-ball burden since James Harden. It’s great that Maxey wants to increase his off-ball movement, but it’ll be largely dependent on Philadelphia’s offensive structure. If Joel Embiid is used as a post hub and/or Paul George gets more opportunity as a ball-handler, this is something that could be wrinkled in here and there.
Maxey believes in Watford
However, it’s what Maxey said about one of his newest teammates that could make the biggest difference for the 76ers. He envisions Trendon Watford – who happens to be one of his best friends – to have a Draymond Green-type of impact for them. Watford is a toolsy four with an unorthodox skillset. His capabilities as a playmaker – whether in the post or off pick-and-rolls – make the Green comparison justifiable.
Don’t get me wrong, Watford isn’t a reincarnation of Green, but his abilities as a passer will add a creative layer to a Philadelphia offense that lacked innovation last season. While he’s not the most athletic, Watford is a plus defender with a high IQ and burly frame. The departure of Guerschon Yabusele left the 76ers desperately in need of a starting-caliber four. But, if Maxey’s vision for Watford comes to fruition, those wounds will heal quickly.
