Just like an annual tradition, the Philadelphia 76ers have once again been linked — whether naturally or forcibly — to some of the biggest names rumored to be available for taking this offseason. And honestly, no one can really blame people for propelling such perennial sentiment, especially in light of the horrible season the franchise had just turned in.

From Kevin Durant to Giannis Antetokounmpo to some other stars, this summer is widely believed to be ripe for a slew of blockbuster deals. And while the 76ers have not been deemed as favorites to snag any of those sterling names, it is simply hasty to rule them out given that Daryl Morey and his crew have the machinery to extend an enticing offer.

But with all that has been said about the what-ifs on the part of Philly, it remains far-fetched to expect them to get a deal done for, say, Durant or Antetokounmpo, precisely because other teams have much more appealing offers that will not require those stars’ mother team to absorb huge risks, unlike in Philly’s case, which will most likely try to sweeten the pot with Paul George being the headliner.

The 76ers could now make a move for Lauri Markkanen

Perhaps, a more realistic and attainable option for them in a trade scenario is Lauri Markkanen. The All-Star had a down year this season, but is still expected to command significant interest on the trade market.

According to Bill Simmons, the league-wide belief is that the Jazz have become more open than before in hearing trade offers for Markkanen. With Utah slowly pivoting toward a full-blown youth movement, they could very well try to extract as much assets and draft capital they can for their star.

If so, the 76ers should pounce. Markkanen would be a perfect fit in Philly next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, and unlike George, he has just entered his prime at 28 years old.

Given his skill set, integrating Markkanen should be a walk in the park. After all, he is an elite catch-and-shoot threat and play finisher who can create his own shot when need be. On defense, his size and length more than makes up for his average speed, and he has ample experience playing all frontcourt positions, showcasing his sheer versatility.

Although there are other teams that could be willing to break the bank for Lauri Markkanen, the Philadelphia 76ers definitely have a much more compelling case to be the All-Star’s new home. Hopefully, the front office will seriously consider eyeing him as a real target this offseason.
