V.J. Edgecombe's absence raises continuous red flags for 76ers' young core

One of the most anticipated Summer League matchups of the year became nothing but an afterthought after it was announced that V.J. Edgecombe and Dylan Harper were listed as out. Still, with the Philadelphia 76ers and San Antonio Spurs’ quality collection of young prospects, it had the makings of a competitive game – until it wasn’t. San Antonio demolished Philadelphia 111-70. Without further ado, let’s get into some ugly takeaways.

Edwards and Bona are massively underperforming

Considering Edgecombe missed the 76ers’ last three games due to a left thumb injury, you’d expect their year-two players such as Justin Edwards and Adem Bona to dominate. Tonight, that was far from the case as they combined for 12 points with six a piece. While the duo’s confidence hasn’t wavered, they’ve been utilized more as self-creators since Philadelphia lacks any type of table-setter.

Bona frequently attempted to attack his man off the dribble, but his shot attempts were routinely swatted as he shot 3-6 from the field. Carter Bryant’s maddening help defense and athleticism played a pivotal role in the effort – recording two of his three blocks against Bona. To avoid this going forward, it would be ideal for Bona to develop into a proficient back-to-the-basket scorer, so he can create separation from his defender.

Philadelphia's other rookies disappointed

On the other hand, Edwards didn’t assert himself as five of his six shot attempts came from beyond the arc. It’s important to note that he and Bona are maximized when used off the ball, whether it’s spot-up threes for Edwards or lob passes to Bona. Still, with the expectations upon them, you’d like to see them both dominate this level of competition, especially since they’ll likely be mainstays in Philadelphia’s rotation next season.

The 76ers’ other rookies failed to impress as well. Johni Broome finished with eight points on 3-8 shooting from the field and five rebounds. His lack of athleticism and mobility remain valid concerns, especially when he’s running the floor and attempting to create his own shot down low. Broome did shoot 2-3 from deep, so there’s one thing he can build on. Hunter Sallis put up two points on 0-5 shooting from the field and didn’t make an impact in any way.

Barlow made a good first impression

If there are two positives, one is that this game is over and the other is that Dominick Barlow had a solid 76ers debut. He notched eight points on 3-5 shooting from the field and five rebounds, three of which came from the offensive glass. His instincts from a rebounding and defensive perspective were adequate and he knew where to position himself offensively. It’s also worth adding that he started in place of Broome.

Philadelphia will face Kon Knueppel and the Charlotte Hornets on July 12th at 6:30 p.m. EST. In a live-game interview with ESPN, Edgecombe revealed his thumb is feeling better and is hopeful he can return at some point.
