It might still be the offseason, but VJ Edgecombe is showing everybody he is as desperate as ever to be great. A sensational 3-point shooting performance during the Bahamas' 100-82 FIBA World Cup Qualifier victory over Panama has highlighted that the Baylor alum will fit like a glove on the Philadelphia 76ers' star-studded roster.
VJ Edgecombe is a perfect fit for the 76ers' new dawn
Second-season syndrome is hard to navigate for a young star trying to establish their reputation in the NBA. Much talent has been lost to believing their own hype and veering away from the hard work that made them special. Edgecombe is seemingly the opposite. He is taking nothing for granted, and his offseason stint with the Bahamas national team is proving he is well aware of the role awaiting him when he returns to reality.
Edgecombe is not going to be front and center in Philadelphia's offense this year; he must adapt to a role that requires him to efficiently drain shots from deep and cut to the basket with aggressive intent when the space opens up in front of him. Any fears of the 23-year-old not being capable of such a task should already be eased, as he dismantled his opponents in World Cup Qualifying.
In 35 minutes of action, Edgecombe recorded 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting and drained 7-of-11 attempts from deep. Not only did he score with ease from 3-point range, but Edgecombe continued his pursuit of the greatest-ever career highlight reel with an outrageous athletic dunk after an alley-oop pass from former Sixers guard Buddy Hield.

Edgecombe doesn't need bigger numbers to show improvement
For players such as Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel, their development will be assessed by how their individual statistics improve from their rookie year and how these numbers catapult their franchises up the regular-season standings. VJ Edgecombe's journey will not follow this path. Philadelphia's versatile guard's main focus must be to become an efficient shooter and learn how to affect the game when the ball isn't in his hands.
After his sensational first year in the league, it would be understandable that Edgecombe's ego was inflated. Edgecombe averaged 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, while shooting 43.8% from the floor. Few young stars wield the maturity to step back and understand that there will be an offensive hierarchy after such a fabulous campaign. The 76ers will be praying that Edgecombe will be fully aware of his responsibilities this season.
Despite living in a world fueled by statistics, this doesn't have to be a career year for Edgecombe to prove he has developed as a player. Philadelphia requires its 2025 first-round pick to be a reliable option rather than the leading member of the band. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown will likely be trusted to orchestrate the Sixers' offense, with Edgecombe, Tyrese Maxey, and Joel Embiid making smart off-ball movements to devastate the opposition.
FIBA World Cup Qualifiers might not be up to the ruthless speed of the NBA, but VJ Edgecombe's improvement from deep will allow him to seamlessly indulge a lesser but pivotal role in the Philadelphia 76ers' offensive blueprint.
