VJ Edgecombe could be the balance the 76ers' stars need alongside them

If VJ Edgecombe can be a volume shooter, it would help balance out the Philadelphia 76ers' starting lineup.

When the Philadelphia 76ers assembled their roster this summer, it was the talk of the town. LeBron James. Jaylen Brown. Two All-NBA superstars being tacked onto an existing core with plenty of talent. But there was a clear problem: Three-point shooting. Philly lacked shooters. Well, maybe VJ Edgecombe could be that.

On Saturday night, in the Sixers’ win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Edgecombe flashed some great three-point shooting. But perhaps more importantly, he shot a lot of threes. If Edgecombe can turn into a reliable three-point threat (while shooting at volume), it would give the Sixers’ starting five a massive boost.

Philadelphia doesn’t have a ton of great three-point shooters on the roster. The starting lineup isn’t amazing from beyond the arc. Getting more from Edgecombe in that area would be huge.

VJ Edgecombe three-point shooting is perfect

Neither James nor Brown is the best three-point shooter. Both are obviously incredible players in so many other areas, but the three-ball isn’t necessarily their forte. Especially not at volume.

Joel Embiid can space the floor a bit, but he’s best used as a paint giant. A guy who can post up and set monster screens (before rolling to the rim and doing his dirty work down low).

Tyrese Maxey is an elite shooter. But considering he’s going to have the ball in his hands a ton, that leaves Philly without any real three-point spacers on the offensive end (when it comes to the starting lineup).

That’s where Edgecombe could come into play. And if his performance against the Bucks on Saturday night is any indication, he has a chance to be a volume shooter for Philly.

In the Sixers’ win over Milwaukee, Edgecombe finished the game with 17 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and two blocks. He shot 5-of-13 from the field.

But more importantly, Edgecombe shot 5-of-10 from behind the three-point line. Shooting 50% from deep range is great, but doing it while taking 10 threes is even better.

Edgecombe has always been a solid shooter. But if he can take things up a notch this season, especially with a higher volume from that range, it would be great.

Obviously, he’s not going to shoot 5-of-10 from distance every single night, but it’s a good sign. A sign that he has the potential to be an efficient volume shooter for Philly throughout the course of the season.

That’s what the Sixers need from him.
