The clock is still ticking on LeBron James' free agency, but at least the Philadelphia 76ers still have a shot.
Regardless of what league figures are saying behind the scenes--predicting a likely reunion for LeBron and the Cleveland Cavaliers--76ers guard VJ Edgecombe has embraced the chase and still has a smile on his face.
When asked about the Sixers' involvement in the LeBron pursuit recently, Edgecombe dropped his honest feelings on the situation.
‘”I think it’s been fun,” Edgecombe told reporters.
His team has a shot at bringing in his GOAT. How can Edgecombe not be happy?
“It’s LeBron James, at the end of the day. To me, he’s the greatest player of all time. So, it would be amazing if he decided to come and play with us. Our goal is to win a championship. If we do get him, we’ll be happy. If not, we’ll still be happy. But it would be great if we do get him.”
Where do the Sixers stand in the LeBron James sweepstakes?
Your guess would be as good as anyone else's if you're choosing among the assumed top three.
The Sixers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Miami Heat are serious contenders to land LeBron. The Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves shouldn't be totally ruled out as well.
While recent reports have suggested that the Warriors see the Cavs as the likely winners of LeBron's free agency, the Sixers haven't taken that stance.
President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey spoke with The Athletic earlier this week to make the team's interest clear in a very public way. Gansey was the second Philadelphia-based executive to go on record, expressing a pitch, after Bob Myers did it recently.
In addition to the public comments, an ESPN report stated that core members of the Sixers have reached out to James privately as well. Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Jaylen Brown have "all been in communication" with the former Los Angeles Lakers player. Maxey is leading the charge.
The Sixers have an open roster spot, and it's reserved for the 41-year-old forward. With a need for a starting forward to play alongside Jaylen Brown, James showed that he is more than capable of being a star-quality player still at this point in his career.
Last year, James appeared in 60 games for the Lakers. He shot 51.5% from the field and averaged 20.9 points per game. James also racked up averages of 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds.
Like Edgecombe, the city of Philadelphia would happily embrace the presence of LeBron James. Any minute now, good news or bad news could land.
