Pressure makes diamonds. Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid will steal all the plaudits as their scoring antics throughout the series have been the Philadelphia 76ers' X-Factor, and rightfully so, but this was more than a two-man masterclass. Despite an inconsistent series, in Game 7 when it mattered most, and the spotlight was at its brightest, VJ Edgecombe proved he isn't here to make up the numbers on the roster—he is a legitimate superstar in the making.
Consistency is key to a player's ascent to becoming one of the NBA's leading faces. Edgecombe has struggled during Philadelphia's playoff series against the Boston Celtics to showcase that part of his game. In his first year in the league, this is understandable as he comes to terms with the relentless speed of a postseason campaign. However, in glimpses, the Sixers fan base has seen the true potential of Edgecombe.
A 30-point, 10-rebound performance in Game 2 of the series inspired the 76ers to a shock 111-97 victory on the road against the Celtics. Next came three below-par performances in which he could not break the 10-point barrier. Questions lingered about whether he could rise again when it mattered most.
Nevertheless, in a Game 7 do-or-die scenario, VJ Edgecombe's fearless mentality returned to propel the Sixers to a magnificent 109-100 triumph over their Eastern Conference rivals.
VJ Edgecombe stunned in Game 7 against the Celtics
The talk surrounding this game centered around the importance of Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey's influence. Without standout performances from Philadelphia’s “Big 3,” the Philadelphia 76ers had little hope of pulling off an upset in the raucous atmosphere of TD Garden. And yet, it was VJ Edgecombe who ignited some of the game’s most decisive moments.
Edgecombe's nervous system was nonexistent as he refused to back down to any defender. During his 44-minute appearance, the rookie sensation recorded 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while shooting 5-11 from deep.
One of his most impressive plays of the night came in the fourth quarter. Quentin Grimes danced around Payton Pritchard to attack the paint, kicking the ball out to an open Andre Drummond in the corner, who then passed it straight to Edgecombe. With Derrick White storming in his direction, Edgecombe faked a pass to his left, sending his defender all the way to Philadelphia to create an open three, which he drained with ease.

Undoubtedly, there were more critical performances during this high-pressure Game 7. However, VJ Edgecombe's composure, effectiveness, and aura on the biggest stage proved that this is a young man heading for superstardom.
