Adding an All-NBA caliber player in Jaylen Brown is a huge statement of intent by the Philadelphia 76ers. However, placing a superstar with this reputation at the forefront of the team's offensive blueprint will come with its issues. VJ Edgecombe showed during his rookie year that he is the future of this franchise -- reducing his responsibilities on the ball will only hinder his development.
VJ Edgecombe was never going to be the 76ers' priority
The sophomore slump is real. Second-year stars struggle to replicate the devastation they inflicted during their rookie year, as opponents have become aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Scouting reports change, meaning younger players must discover a level of versatility in their skill set that will allow them to continue their trajectory to the very top of the NBA.
VJ Edgecombe's slump could come for a different reason entirely. When landing in Philadelphia, the 20-year-old landed in a more favorable situation than most lottery picks. After being selected with the third overall pick in the 2025 draft, Edgecombe entered an organization with championship ambitions -- whether that was realistic or not is a completely different discussion.
With this being the case, every trade after his acquisition was unlikely to be made with the intention of elevating Edgecombe's game -- as it will be with the Dallas Mavericks and Cooper Flagg -- Joel Embiid is the 76ers' priority, and the franchise's blockbuster move for Jaylen Brown only reinforces this fact.
Jaylen Brown will be granted a higher role in the food chain
Brown has only one ambition on his mind -- a second championship ring. After consistently being the bridesmaid and never the bride with the Boston Celtics, Brown is unlikely to accept a passenger seat with the Sixers; the 2024 Final MVP is going to demand a spot at the head of the snake.
Nick Nurse will have to find a suitable system that allows Brown, Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey to each pick their moments to take advantage of the opposition. The question is, where does this leave VJ Edgecombe? Nobody would expect a sophomore to take a superior role to a player with the stature of Jaylen Brown, but the 76ers can't allow this move to stunt the talented prospect's development.
Over 75 games during his rookie year, Edgecombe had a mixed offensive role for Philadelphia due to his teammates each taking turns on the injury table. No matter what was required of him, the Baylor alum thrived, averaging 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.
What the numbers fail to show is the impressive development of his jump shot. Before the season began, Edgecombe's mechanics did not look fluid whatsoever. In fact, it would be fair to say that his Abu Dhabi debut against the New York Knicks highlighted this flaw and raised questions about what role he was ready to play for his new team.
Nevertheless, Edgecombe continued to put in the work over the offseason, and by the time the season rolled around, he had refined his shooting and looked ready to become Philadelphia's next superstar.
His Sixers debut saw him lead the franchise to a dramatic 117-116 victory over the Boston Celtics, in which he recorded 34 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while shooting 50 percent from the floor.
Time and time again, Nick Nurse turned to VJ Edgecombe to pull a rabbit out of the hat and help propel the Philadelphia 76ers to an unlikely victory. The performance levels he exhibited proved he was ready for a more prominent role in the Sixers' offense -- something that can't happen due to the arrival of Jaylen Brown.
Has the franchise stunted the development of their star rookie in the pursuit of a championship ring?
