Worrying Tyrese Maxey trend could derail 76ers' entire season

Despite just returning from injury, Maxey recorded a team-high in minutes.

One thing is for sure: without Tyrese Maxey's devastating performances this season, the Philadelphia 76ers would have little to no hope of achieving their postseason ambitions. Both his scoring and playmaking development have been remarkable during the absence of his superstar teammate, Joel Embiid. Much like Embiid, the Sixers have developed a troubling overreliance on Maxey’s skill set, forcing him to log an excessive amount of minutes that will almost certainly result in another injury.

Understandably, during pivotal moments in the season, franchises will summon the players they believe in most to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. So, Nick Nurse's usage of Tyrese Maxey during the 76ers' 118-114 victory over the Charlotte Hornets is far from groundbreaking. The electric guard registered an exhausting 43 minutes on the floor, while scoring 26 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.

Given that the Hornets (39-35) and the Sixers (41-33) continue to push to secure an automatic playoff seeding relentlessly, this was a fixture both teams could not afford to lose. This fact alone would have created a narrative in the coach's head that Maxey had to stay on the floor -- which is understandable. Nevertheless, this is far from an anomaly throughout the 2025-26 season, continuing in this manner is simply unsustainable.

Tyrese Maxey is being pushed to the point of exhaustion

At 25 years old, you’re expected to have fresh legs every night, and with the massive paychecks athletes bring in, there’s this assumption that fatigue shouldn’t even be a factor. Additionally, Maxey has only just returned to feature for the first time since March 7, so again, tiredness should not come into play yet. But the reality is, Nurse has proven time and time again that the Kentucky alum is a mainstay of this rotation, and a high volume of minutes will continue.

Maxey has featured in 61 games so far this season. During each appearance, he averages a mammoth 38.3 minutes per game -- his third consecutive year of averaging 37+ minutes per game under the current head coach. Maxey is leading the entire NBA in this statistic, with Amen Thompson (37.3), Kevin Durant (36.5), Luke Doncic (36), and Anthony Edwards (35.5) all behind him in the standings.

With Joel Embiid’s career consistently impacted by injuries, Maxey is steadily emerging as the new face of the 76ers franchise. The passing of the torch will be vital as Philadelphia looks to create a new era of basketball that provides a greater landscape for winning games, but this cannot come at the expense of Maxey's health, as it has in the past with Embiid.

Maxey plays with a high-octane attitude and will look to push the pace at any given moment. Throughout his time under Nick Nurse, the head coach has consistently placed the ball in Maxey's hands and relied on a heavy-iso offensive game plan when his team cannot devastate their opponents in transition.

There’s no denying this type of player is thrilling to watch, but expecting them to maintain that style for the heavy minutes Tyrese Maxey is logging will only risk injury -- if not this season, then eventually down the road. The Philadelphia 76ers cannot afford to fumble another star due to their desperation to win. Joel Embiid is a clear example of a supreme talent that has carried too large a burden throughout his career; the same cannot happen to Maxey.
