Philadelphia 76ers executive Bryan Colangelo will push hard to sign free agent point guard Kyle Lowry. Right or wrong, he must try for many reasons.

Philadelphia 76ers President Bryan Colangelo faces a free agency decision now.  It’s beyond what is best for the team, beyond what is his vision for the future.  It’s a matter of his personal integrity. For months, the team has heard about veteran leadership, winning culture, turning this thing around.

Now, the embodiment of all those nebulous feel-good cliche’s is staring him in the face.  Former Toronto Raptor point guard Kyle Lowry is about to become a free agent.  The Toronto Raptors may offer him a max deal.  Kyle Lowry himself has already claimed this contract is about winning a championship ring.

Fight The Fights That Need Fighting

But Bryan Colangelo has no recourse. On one hand, he cannot wave this one off. On the other hand, he cannot shrug his shoulders and walk away.  In summary, he will pursue Kyle Lowry for all he is worth for one simple reason: you fight the fights that need fighting.

Everything we do sends messages.  If you scold a child, you send a message to the child. But you send messages to anyone who witnesses the act.

    A Bigger Picture

So too, Bryan Colangelo has no choice but to pursue Kyle Lowry. You see, he traded for Kyle Lowry when he was the Toronto Raptors General Manager.  In that deal, he  sent a protected first round pick and reserve wingman Gary Forbes to the Houston Rockets for point guard Kyle Lowry.

It just so happens that the other “executive” in that trade was none other than Sam Hinkie.  And that first round pick actually became part of the package that Sam Hinkie compiled to wrestle James Harden from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

And so, history repeats itself once more. Former Philadelphia 76ers exec Sam Hinkie was replaced by Bryan Colangelo. And Kyle Lowry is electing free agency. Fit or not, there is only one way this story will be written.  Bryan Colangelo will pursue Kyle Lowry.

    Winning Culture

The die were cast when Jerry Colangelo announced that the Philadelphia 76ers were “close”.  In that revelation, he asserted that the team needed a winning culture, more NBA veterans, and a stronger emphasis on winning now.

Kyle Lowry is a favorite player of the Colangelos.   Much like Elton Brand, or Ish Smith, he is a veteran presence with post season experience who will work with the younger players.  The team’s efforts in the 2016 free agency landed some veterans, but they had only a minimal impact on the court.  Colangelo is on a tight deadline, and he needs more now.
