4 players who can make (or break) the Philadelphia 76ers’ 2018-19 season
4. Landry Shamet
Landry Shamet put together a strong preseason, earning himself a spot in the Sixers’ rotation. How his role evolves once Wilson Chandler returns is worth monitoring, but he should be locked into the second unit at this point.
During his two seasons at Wichita State, Shamet was one of the best spot-up shooters in college basketball. He was also their point guard, adding some ball handling and passing chops that most deadeye shooters lack.
In preseason, Shamet looked like the potential solution to those “how can the Sixers replace Belinelli?” questions. He’s thriving in an off-ball role, relocating to open space and benefiting from the Sixers’ elite playmaking forces.
He’s also learning from J.J. Redick, who’s a prime mentor for a player of Shamet’s ilk. As long as his shots continue to fall, Shamet brings value as an elite three-point marksman in the second unit. He can also attack closeouts and make high-I.Q. passes, something Belinelli struggled with.
Defense will be key for Shamet, as he was never particularly effective on that end in college. He lacks elite physical tools, but has the overall awareness to become a passable team defender. That will be important.
