Point Guard: Landry Shamet

In the NBA, positional labels are becoming obsolete. This is based on defensive assignments more than anything else, and even then most high-level point guards will probably get assigned to Butler or Simmons.

Either way, the five actual players matter more than the positional label. Landry Shamet should start in the backcourt, with Simmons maintaining lead ball handling duties. Don’t overthink it.

While Butler is a capable three-point shooter, he’s far from elite. Keeping ample shooting around the core trio will be important, and unfortunately Fultz doesn’t accomplish that goal right now. Shamet has been surprisingly competent on both ends as a rookie.

Learning from J.J. Redick, Shamet can bring many of the same benefits to the starting five. He moves off the ball, sets the occasional screen and knocks down threes on the move. The Sixers need more depth, but they already have a couple plus shooters.

Shamet can compete on defense, space the floor on offense, and occasionally handle the ball when needed. He’s the ideal fit here.
