The Philadelphia 76ers underwent sweeping changes on the first night of free agency.

The first night of free agency brought Tobias Harris, Al Horford, Josh Richardson and Mike Scott to the Philadelphia 76ers. On the other hand, Jimmy Butler now departs for Miami on a four-year deal to finish his prime seasons in South Beach.

After the night settled down, Jack Duffy and Christopher Kline hopped on the podcast to offer initial reactions to each move. They discuss how each sign (and trade) fits, as well as the Sixers’ short and long-term outlook after overhauling the roster once more.

The first move of the night was J.J. Redick‘s departure. In a move that surprised quite a few, Redick took a two-year, $26.5 million deal as soon as 6 PM hit, joining fellow Duke product Zion Williamson in New Orleans.

Jack discusses what the Sixers will miss in Redick, while Christopher breaks down the logistics behind his exit. Redick was a consummate pro during his time in Philadelphia and deserves credit for his importance to Brett Brown’s offense.

Then the pair discusses the Tobias Harris deal, re-upping on a five-year, $180 million deal to stay in Philadelphia. While it feels like an overpay, both agree Harris was a must-keep and someone who’s role will look different — and perhaps better — next season.

Mike Scott also returned on a small two-year contract. He was immediately ingrained in the Sixers’ culture last season and is someone whose skill set addresses Philadelphia’s current needs. Jack and Christopher discuss his versatility, shooting and toughness.

After keeping the Clippers crew together, the Sixers agreed to ship Jimmy Butler to the Miami Heat in a sign-and-trade. There are conflicting reports on whether or not Butler was offered a five-year max, but Christopher discusses the importance of respecting his decision.

The Sixers got Josh Richardson in return. Jack offers an outline of Richardson’s skill set and fit in Philadelphia, while both agree he’s a tremendous asset long-term. The Sixers should have gone all-in for Butler, but it’s not a bad alternative.

For the finale, Jack and Christopher break down Al Horford’s game. The veteran big man will sign a four-year, $109 million contract to join Embiid in the Sixers frontcourt. The pair discusses Horford’s skill level, Philadelphia’s overwhelming size on defense, and how his contract might age.

There’s also talk about what the Sixers need to prioritize moving forward as the big dominos continue to fall in free agency.
