The Philadelphia 76ers need another point guard on the roster.
There’s little to complain about the job that president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and the Philadelphia 76ers have done during this condensed offseason. However, there’s one thing that this team is missing and that’s a veteran point guard.
Here’s how the potential depth charts are looking for each position so far.
- Point guard: Ben Simmons, Tyrese Maxey
- Shooting guard: Seth Curry, Shake Milton, Isaiah Joe, Dakota Mathias (Two-Way)
- Small Forward: Danny Green, Matisse Thybulle, Furkan Korkmaz, Terrance Ferguson
- Power forward: Tobias Harris, Mike Scott, Paul Reed (Possibly Two-Way)
- Center: Joel Embiid, Dwight Howard, Tony Bradley
Why the Sixers need another point guard and some names available.
As it can be clearly be seen above, the Sixers are thin at the point guard position. While Simmons is one of the best playmakers in the NBA, he’s not a conventional point guard. Maxey is a rookie combo guard who out of necessity will play at the point guard spot this season.

Having a veteran point guard will help the development of Maxey and having that type of mentor would benefit both of the team’s current point guards. Simmons also proved last season that there are times that he will struggle with injuries and miss games. Having a veteran during those times will help the 76ers stay afloat during his absences.
The good news is that there’s still plenty of time before the season begins and Philly still has one more roster spot. While, there’s aren’t any big names outside of former All-Star Isaiah Thomas, who I’ve advocated for in the past, there are a lot of solid backup point guards still available.
Reggie Jackson is another point guard I’ve written about in the past as a possible option. Tyler Johnson was a player I wrote on prior to the NBA hiatus. Other point guards like Shabazz Napier, Emmanuel Mudiay, Langston Galloway, and Brandon Knight are still available as well.
The Philadelphia 76ers need a veteran point guard heading into the season and they should grab one while there still some solid ones on the market.
