Philadelphia 76ers: Daryl Morey will be prudent to begin the season

Daryl Morey is leading the Philadelphia 76ers strategically this offseason.

Despite just starting his tenure as the president of basketball operations, Daryl Morey has already made some big changes to the Philadelphia 76ers roster. He’s brought in more shooting in place of Al Horford and Josh Richardson, had a good draft, and signed a very good free agent in Dwight Howard.

Despite these moves, it’s hard to imagine a front office wizard like Morey is done making moves. The team still has one roster spot available and has the whole taxpayers’ mid-level exception to use. Philly also still has all their future first round picks, outside of the 2025 draft.

The Sixers still have the assets to land themselves a solid player, but that doesn’t mean that Morey is in a rush to do so.

Morey is playing the long game regarding the Sixers roster construction.

Morey recently revealed how he’s approaching this season and how he’s being conservative with the team’s assets. Tip of the hat to Noah Levick of NBCSPhilly for the quote.

"“We have certain bullets. We have (the taxpayer mid-level exception), we’ve got future draft picks. We’ve got certain bullets that we can use and I don’t really like using them now. I just don’t. Because the issues we see now … it’s going to be a different set of issues a month into the season……I almost guarantee we’re going to say, ‘That’s not quite working’ or ‘End of games isn’t quite working.’ And if we use the bullets now, we’re going to use them on the wrong ones (instead of) when the information is more clear as we get closer to the trade deadline and places like that. I think that is definitely what I like to do, is evaluate and address the gaps as we get closer to the playoffs.”"

This isn’t at all surprising considering how many roster changes that the Houston Rockets experience on a regular basis under Morey. Morey is a stats and analysis-driven executive and to be honest, he hasn’t gathered much on Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons thus far so. Waiting and collecting more information to learn how to maximize them just makes sense.

I’ve written on the 76ers needing another point guard on the roster, but Morey may not believe that, or maybe he’s waiting to see which ones becomes available. It’s not a bad strategy and one that Christopher Kline mentioned as an option for the team on the most recent episode of The Sixer Sense Podcast.

During his short tenure, Morey has already made some great moves and so Philadelphia 76ers’ fans should trust this long-term approach by the executive regarding the roster flexibility.
