Sixers offseason grades: Drafting Tyrese Maxey

  • A

Heading into the draft, I was neither hoping nor expecting the Sixers to draft Tyrese Maxey, as I was under the belief that he’d be a late lottery pick or at least, just miss it. Maxey falling to No. 21 was a gift the Sixers should be grateful for.

Maxey is a dynamic scoring guard from Kentucky that brings a spark off the bench that the Sixers need. He’s good on the pick-and-roll, in transition and an excellent playmaker to complement his scoring ability. His length and speed also allow him to be a solid defender.

While his numbers indicate poor shooting, his jump shot does pass the eye test and I think his numbers reflect poor shot selection more than they reflect poor shooting. Some NBA experience should correct this over time.

All in all, a brilliant pick by Philly and I believe Maxey will exceed expectations coming into the season.
