Sixers’ Rookie Report: Tyrese Maxey struggled in bigger role
Overall, this past week was a quiet one for the Philadelphia 76ers rookies in regards to their playing time. That being written, there was one rookie that saw a larger role in one outing this past week, but he struggled in that game.
21st pick, 2020 draft
Against the Boston Celtics and the New Orleans Pelicans, Tyrese Maxey, only saw a minute in each of those matchups. However, against the Oklahoma City Thunder, he received 20 minutes of game action in part due to the absence of Danny Green and Tobias Harris.
Sadly, he didn’t perform well in that out as he scored seven points on 2-8 shooting from the field. He also had five assists, one steal, and one turnover. These are the type of games where Maxey needs to play well and his shooting just wasn’t there for the Sixers.
Season averages: 7.1 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.4 steals, 0.2 blocks, 0.6 turnovers, and 1.2 fouls. Shooting 44.8 percent on field goals, 27.9 percent on 3-pointers, and 86.8 on free throws.

49th pick, 2020 draft
Isaiah Joe played one minute against the Pelicans and nine minutes against the Thunder. He failed to convert any of his shots in any of those games. The cold shooting as of late for Joe isn’t a good sign in the future, and if this keeps up, there’s a good chance that fans will have to go to the G-League next year if they want to see the sharpshooter play.
Season averages: 3.5 points, 1.0 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.3 steals, 0.1 blocks, 0.2 turnovers, and 1.0 fouls. Shooting 34.0 percent on field goals, 33.8 percent on 3-pointers, and 88.9 on free throws.
58th pick, 2020 draft
Paul Reed also appeared in all three games this past week, however, he only saw more than one minute against the Thunder where he recorded six minutes, three points, two rebounds, and one assist. It will be interesting if the acquisition of Anthony Tolliver will impact his playing moving forward, especially in the long term considering Tolliver currently on a 10-day deal but could receive a longer deal in the future.
Season averages: 2.9 points, 1.9 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.3 steals, 0.5 blocks, 0.5 turnovers, and 1.1 fouls. Shooting 47.7 percent on field goals, 0.0 percent on 3-pointers, and 25.0 on free throws.
Undrafted, 2020
Mason Jones appeared against New Orleans and Oklahoma City but only played more than a minute in the last game of the week. He had three points on 1-2 shooting from the field and 1-1 from the 3-point line in four minutes against the Thunder. It will be interesting whenever Jones will get more playing time because he could be a pretty solid scoring option off the bench in the future.
Season averages (76ers): 3.0 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 0.7 assist. Shooting 80.0 percent on field goals and 100.0 percent on 3-pointers.
With a healthy roster, it appears that the Philadelphia 76ers’ rookies won’t get very many minutes. However, when they do they have to impress with their play.
