Ranking every Sixers player — 13. Charles Bassey

It has been frustratingly difficult for Charles Bassey to get real opportunities this season, but he has made the most of his time on the court. Across 23 appearances, Bassey is averaging 3.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks in 7.3 minutes. His per-minute production is up there with the NBA’s best rotation bigs.

Bassey has been an elite rebounder and shot-blocker since high school. Once a five-star recruit with the reputation of a future top-5 pick, Bassey spent three turbulent and productive seasons at Western Kentucky before finally jumping to the pros. His physical profile and ability to anchor a defense give him a pretty clear NBA career path, be it in Philadelphia or elsewhere. The Sixers would be wise to test him properly before he hits free agency either this summer or next.

Listed at 6-foot-11 and 235 pounds, Bassey is a towering figure on the court. He has the strength to wage battle in the post, but the foot speed to defend in space and hold his own on the perimeter. He’s best used in drop coverage still, but Bassey should be a genuine plus defender once he overcomes his penchant for foul trouble. That’s not uncommon with rookie bigs.

Bassey’s offensive skill set is limited but effective. He sets solid screens and shows excellent footwork rolling to the rim. He doesn’t play outside himself and is an effective lob threat. Of all the bigs on the roster, he’s the cleanest on-paper fit with James Harden.
