Sixers Podcast: “MVP Race is Over” + Coach and Executive of the Year
The Sixer Sense Podcast is coming at you following an MVP-defining game by Joel Embiid where the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Boston Celtics 103-101. Embiid scored 52 points on 20-25 shooting from the field (80%!) and 12-13 from the free-throw line. He added 13 rebounds and 6 assists and looked truly unstoppable, by the definition of that word. The rest of the Sixers did not show up and Doc Rivers said as much in his postgame where he asserted “(Embiid) had half of our points…the MVP race is over”.
Harden echoed Rivers’ assertion and even members of the Celtics were left dumbfounded after Embiid’s performance. Derrick White was asked in his postgame how to stop Embiid and had this amazing quote: “I think the whole league’s trying to figure that out right now. So, if you got any ideas, I think every other NBA team would like to know.” The betting odds swung drastically after Tuesday night’s game and Embiid is now -750 to win his first NBA MVP. Does the group agree that the MVP race is now over?
Lucas Johnson, Christopher Kline, and Jonathan Geib transition the conversation to a comparison debate between Allen Iverson’s MVP season in 2000-01 to Embiid’s current MVP-caliber season. Which of these Philadelphia 76ers’ greats was more important to their team? Is there a different answer if the question is who was more dominant in their era?
The group ends the podcast by continuing their NBA awards discussion. In this episode, Lucas, Chris, and Jonathan provide their NBA Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year rankings. Executive of the Year is usually the most subjective award and this year there are several quality options. Coach of the Year on the other hand seems like a formality at this point. Give the podcast a listen to see who the guys choose!
