Thanks to a massively disappointing no-show in Game 4 of their first-round series against the Celtics, the Philadelphia 76ers are now just one loss away from getting booted out of the playoffs and ending their 2025-26 campaign altogether. With the series shifting back to Boston, they are not going to be favored to continue their playoff run, especially in light of the way they performed in their most recent outing.
That fact carries with it an attendant consequence that could entail huge changes coming, though. If they lose Game 5, the 76ers are most likely going to start thinking about life without head coach Nick Nurse. He is probably going to be in the hot seat (if he isn't already), and there are going to be numerous candidates in the market who can replace him anyway.
Coaching carousels have become much more pervasive in the league in recent years, and the 76ers are not the kind of bunch that will veer away from the rigodon. Despite more modulated expectations from the outside, the win-now edict spreadeagled across the organization remains strong and effectual, which makes it all the more imperative for the front office to act accordingly to bolster the sidelines.
The 76ers are one loss away from likely putting Nick Nurse in the hot seat
Expectations were high on Nurse after he landed in Philly. However, since assuming the post from Doc Rivers in 2023, the 76ers have not won a single playoff series. In Nurse's first season as head coach, the 76ers finished as the No. 7 seed and got eliminated in the first round. In his second campaign, Philly was hit extremely hard by the injury bug and ended up turning in one of the worst records in the league.
Now, the 76ers seem poised for another exit in the first-round. Overcoming a 3-1 deficit is an extremely tall task, and given how good the Celtics have been, it is increasingly likely that Philly will suffer the same fate of getting booted out in the first round.
A lot of factors that led to their lack of meaningful success over the last three years are those that are not within the control of anyone. In truth, it would be disingenuous to toss everything up to Nurse being mediocre at his job. After all, this is still a well-acclaimed tactician who has already won a championship in 2019.
Still, Nurse is not without his faults. His in-game management has been a usual point of criticism among fans for quite some time now, and his late-game decisions on btoh ends have puzzled many. His inability to get the most out of his bench players has also been concerning.
As such, if the 76ers go ahead and get eliminated early, Nick Nurse will probably be one of the leading candidates to get replaced this offseason. His and the team's lack of success might not be imputable to him entirely, but struggle necessitates changes. Unfortunately for him, a change in the sidelines is the easiest to effectuate.
