The Philadelphia 76ers will have very lofty expectations levied on them in the upcoming 2026-27 NBA season. After a relatively successful campaign which otherwise culminated into another title-less run, the team made some major recalibrations this offseason, none more prominent than their blockbuster trade for former Celtics star Jaylen Brown.

The jury, however, is not yet as firm on the 76ers being one of the favorites to win the title thanks in large part to their shallow roster outside of their new core four. Be that as it may, the front office remains in the hunt for LeBron James, and acquiring the superstar would instantly push them a tier above the rest as definitive championship favorites.

For now, the 76ers still have a decent shot at signing the megastar in free agency. According to numerous reports, Philadelphia is one of the three most likely landing spots for James with Cleveland and Miami reckoned to be the only ball clubs ahead of them in the vaunted bidding war. As such, the possibility of them deploying a starting five consisting of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Brown, and James is pretty much alive.

LeBron James is the one piece that will get the 76ers over the hump

Aside from depth and bench play, two things which are lacking on this team in plain view are playmaking and high-level play at forward. Brown is more of a wing while Maxey cannot be mistaken for a pure floor general despite his steady improvement in that department.

James ticks both of those boxes and then some. While he is probably already in the final year of his career, he remains an elite talent and a tremendous floor and ceiling raiser with his elite playmaking skills and ability to take over on both ends when needed.

Having James as the nominal point guard on the 76ers will make for an absolute cheat code –– one that could break basketball altogether. He will definitely unlock a new dimension for the team's nucleus all while providing the team with a legendary closer in crunch time. That is something they have badly needed for a long time, especially in the playoffs.

Philly is desperate to snap a title drough that has lasted for more than four decades. But if LeBron James ends up being a 76er, suffice to say that their title-less streak will come to en eventful end.
