After adding two All-NBA players in LeBron James and Jaylen Brown this offseason, the Philadelphia 76ers now have the most formidable core in the NBA, at least on paper. Suffice it to say that scoring should not be an issue in any and all instances this coming season. In fact, this team is actually primed to make history as the first team to ever have not one, not two, not three, but five different players averaging north of 18 points per game in a single season.
With the 76ers still having Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, they already have four players who will easily breach that figure. The fifth component of that will be VJ Edgecombe, who should also be poised to increase his scoring average from his freshman campaign as he improves in Year 2. As such, that milestone should be well within the realm of possibility for this group.
The 76ers are poised to achieve historic scoring milestone this season
No team has had five players average north of 18 points per game in a full season. Four has been done before, with the 2019-20 LA Clippers as the latest one, when Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Montrezl Harrell, and Lou Williams turned in more than 18 markers per contest. The 76ers are equipped with the weapons necessary to exceed that.
Some people will consider the uncertainty as a problem, but the fact that the 76ers might not even have a firm pecking order in the scoring department this season is actually one of the strongest points of this group. Any of the five players on their opening group can lead them in scoring on any given night.
Embiid, Brown, and Maxey are shoo-ins to average well above 20 points per game. James will be focusing on being the team's main playmaker, but he should still comfortably average more than 18 points per outing. Edgecombe is a bit more precarious on that end, given that many are expecting him to take the biggest step back in view of his little pedigree, but that is not necessarily true.
Nick Nurse will definitely find a way to optimize the talent level on the roster and spread the wealth by heavily staggering the minutes of his starters. That should open up a lot of scoring opportunities for the main gunners.
In addition, the coaching staff will surely make it a point to rest some of their older cogs, such as Embiid and James, from time to time. That alone will give the other three an ample chance to tally big scoring nights as they aim to fill the void left by those players.
Making history of that kind will not exactly be a point of emphasis for the 76ers next season, but it should be a direct consequence of them having such a stacked lineup. As long as it leads to wins, this kind of dynamic should be pretty welcome as they mount their title bid.
