The Philadelphia 76ers will enter the offseason facing a huge opportunity for a potential roster turnover. While that will certainly not entail a shift in the nucleus of this team, the front office will at least have the chance to make drastic changes around their core players. After all, more than half of their players from this season could hit the open market.
With the team not having ample financial ammo to pursue some big names, the front office will have to be extra opportunistic to bring in quality players. To that effect, they should seriously consider going after Khris Middleton in free agency, especially since he fills a bunch of needs this 76ers squad desperately needs to address before the following season.
Middleton, a three-time All-Star and a champion with the Bucks in 2021, split time between the Wizards and the Mavericks this season. He suited up in 63 games all year long, which is the highest number of games he has played since the 2021-22 campaign. While he is, without a doubt, already in a declined state, he remains a serviceable player who can bolster the 76ers bench.
The 76ers could target Khris Middleton in free agency
While he is nearly 35 years old with an extensive track record of injuries to boot, Middleton still has more than enough juice left in the tank to be a potential game-changer off the bench for teams eyeing the championship. His scoring average has gone down steadily over the last few years, but that came as a result of him taking on a more modulated role on the offensive end.
The veteran wing's strengths can still be pinpointed on a nightly basis. He remains a terrific three-point shooter whom defenses cannot ignore at all costs. His mid-range game is still pretty solid, and his secondary playmaking is reliable enough to help mitigate the 76ers' lack of natural playmakers.
The 76ers need size on the wings, and Middleton's 6'7" frame will definitely help in that regard. While he no longer has the mobility to keep up with his opponents the way he did when he was still with the Bucks, he at least has the smarts and the experience to make the most of his ranginess.
Of course, there are clear and vivid red flags when it comes to Middleton, but if there is one thing clear, it is that the potential rewards of adding him in free agency appear to be lofty, especially for a team like the 76ers.
