The Philadelphia 76ers will enter the 2026-27 season with arguably the most talented roster in the league after adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, which makes them one of the strongest title contenders in the upcoming campaign. Nonetheless, that should not prevent the team's brain trust from going after players who have the potential to be solid contributors to the group. To that effect, they should consider zeroing in on Cam Whitmore as a possible midseason addition.
As first reported by Hoops Hype's Michael Scotto, Whitmore, a former first-round pick just three years ago, has just been waived by the Cavaliers. Now, the 22-year-old is on the lookout for his next NBA home with training camp set to begin about a month from now. His best shot to land a spot on a team is to wait until the midseason, the exact juncture when the 76ers can utilize their final roster spot to bring another player in.
The 76ers should strongly consider targeting Cam Whitmore as a midseason addition
Three years into his NBA career, the electric scorer has yet to find a consistent role in the league. Once touted as one of the best scorers in his draft class, he has shown glimpses of being a high-octane bucket-getter from all three levels. So far, his biggest problem has been locking in on the other parts of his game, especially in the non-scoring departments.
At this point in time, Whitmore will greatly benefit from being in an environment where he will have a lot of veteran experience guiding him. The 76ers clearly fit that mold, given the amount of proven talent and experience they have on their roster.
Whitmore's hypothetical fit in Philly is a tad nebulous given that the team is already set in most positions, but the 76ers are not exactly the healthiest of teams out there. Their bench squad has been fortified this offseason, but they are just one injury away from seeing their functional depth take a major hit.
For just a fraction of the price, the 76ers will be able to have a low-risk, high-reward reclamation project if they take on the Cam Whitmore experiment. While his current stock is low at the moment, the front office has to usher in young, high-ceiling players like him who will not cudgel them into having to break the bank. After all, the franchise is also looking toward building for the future while doubling down on their present.
