The offseason is already in its final stretch, but the Philadelphia 76ers still have one more thing on their to-do list that remains unresolved. While they have had the most eventful summer out of all teams, one roster spot is still unoccupied at this point. There are some intriguing names who could pique their interest, but one free agent they should absolutely avoid is arguably the flashiest one remaining –– Cam Thomas.
Thomas, who averaged 20 points per game over the last three seasons, is easily the most productive player left unsigned on the open market, at least from a numbers standpoint. That being said, there are good reasons why no team has picked him up yet, and those apply more intensely to a team like the 76ers, given the way they are constructed.
The 76ers must absolutely avoid Cam Thomas at all costs
Thomas saw his role get drastically reduced when he was with the Nets this past season, and that culminated in him being waived. The Bucks picked him up from the waiver wire, but he did not last long either. Eventually, the 24-year-old ended the season without a ball club to play for.
He is highly touted as one of the better pure scorers in the game, but that is basically the only thing that he brings to the table. Thomas is not a facilitator by any means, nor is he a willing defender. When he is on the court, he will look to score, and his tunnel vision prevents him from contributing elsewhere. His non-engaging attitude did not help, either.
The 76ers are quite literally littered with high-octane scorers, so all they need at this juncture are low-usage players who can impact the game in the less glamorous parts thereof. Thomas, a one-dimensional scorer, is simply not going to cut it for the particular rendition of this squad.
Thomas still has more than a month to find his next home before training camp, and there might be a rebuilding team out there that would be willing to rehabilitate his value or keep him as a possible mainstay. But teams expected to be in the mix for the playoffs, especially those tabbed as championship contenders like the 76ers, are simply not going to be good fits for the young scorer.
Philadelphia can no longer afford to hunt for the brightest name remaining at this point in time. And with that in mind, Cam Thomas should not be on their radar at the slightest for the most obvious reasons.
