76ers get an insulting win total prediction that may be painfully accurate

These is probably a good reason why.

The Philadelphia 76ers have arguably the most talented core in the NBA for next season after adding two All-NBA players in LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, but it seems like not everyone is especially high on their ability to dominate the regular season. ESPN predicts them to win 50 games in the upcoming campaign, which is a relatively low total, given their personnel. One might even call it insulting, but that might actually be a painfully accurate forecast.

With a projected 50-32 win-loss card, ESPN has the 76ers finishing fourth in a very tight Eastern Conference race behind the Knicks, Pistons, and Cavaliers. Now, while fans and pundits alike will likely scoff at this prognosis, there are good reasons why Philly could hover around this win total when it is all said and done next season, namely, injury concerns and the necessary adjustment period.

ESPN's stingy win total prediction for the 76ers might be painfully accurate

Unlike the teams projected to finish above them, the 76ers will have to go through an adjustment period that could take a while. After all, incorporating two Finals MVPs into an already star-studded nucleus is no easy task for both the players and the coaching staff. Roles will definitely change, and the team will have to get used to having a new player in LeBron initiating the offense with Brown also finding his spots in a crowded scoring platoon.

Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe will likewise need to get accustomed to playing larger roles as play finishers instead of being constant initiators. Those things simply take time, and it is not peculiar to see uber-talented teams have a rather modest record early in the season as chemistry brews and on-court familiarity is still at a relative low.

Another major reason for their modest win total projection is the fact that the injury bug has a way of attaching itself to the 76ers. Embiid seems to be healthier than ever as he approaches the season, but you can never really know with him, given how the sheer number of unlucky breaks he has caught in recent years. James himself has missed a considerable number of games due to injuries in the last few seasons.

The 76ers are, without a doubt, strong championship contenders. Be that as it may, the circumstances surrounding their revamped and fortified core and the injury history of some of their stars are the main reasons why early preseason forecasts will be modest for their regular-season finish. But as long as they are healthy come playoff time, their standing will not be as important. After all, this team has the necessary talent and experience to win it all no matter where they are slotted.
