The Philadelphia 76ers ushered in arguably the two biggest reinforcements available this offseason after acquiring both LeBron James and Jaylen Brown. As such, they were widely touted as strong title favorites for next season. However, franchise legend Julius Erving issued a strong warning about the team's chemistry for the upcoming campaign, raising a hard-hitting point that definitely cannot be ignored.
Dr. J spoke to TMZ Sports recently, and while he admitted to buying into the team's strong chances for the championship next season, he reminded people about the catch when it comes to title hopefuls with an abundance of talent. The 76ers legend specifically pointed out the age discrepancy on the team's nucleus, stating that it is still a matter of time until it can be ascertained whether that dynamic could work.
Julius Erving issues an important warning to the 76ers new superteam
Erving, who led the 76ers to their last championship way back in 1983, explained that the age dynamic between LeBron, the team's elder statesman, and the likes of VJ Edgecombe, who is nearly two decades younger than the megastar, will be an interesting nugget to follow as the team brews its chemistry. Joel Embiid is 32, making him some sort of a middleman in that regard.
While age is not really a compelling factor for or against any team's title bid, it certainly does something to the group's chemistry. Fortunately, James has had experience playing with guys much younger than him, although the age gap he will be having compared to Edgecombe and even Tyrese Maxey is not really like anything he has seen before with his teams that ended up winning it all.
The 76ers have to allow themselves to simmer, and that process could even entail some growing pains early on. As Erving pointed out, roster-building is akin to cooking. It will take time before seeing what combinations and strategies work, especially now that the team has much more variance and talent compared to before.
Erving is a living legend who was the face of the 76ers when they last won the championship, so he definitely has the pedigree to speak on the new superteam's potential hurdles. Fortunately, this group is now littered with battle-tested veterans, so the younger guys will have some sterling examples to follow as they unite for a common goal, which is to snap the franchise's title drought that has lasted for more than four decades already.
