The first summer of work for the Philadelphia 76ers’ president of basketball operations, Mike Gansey, has been celebrated plenty by fans who watched a new front office quickly turn in one of the biggest blockbuster summers in quite some time.
Was it too much in too little time, though? Should the Sixers get crowned as one of the top front offices in the NBA after just a few months of work? One recent assessment from CBS Sports brings the Sixers’ front office right back down to earth with a recent front-office ranking.
Time will tell if they are one of the best
Back in February, the Sixers’ front office ranked No. 9, according to CBS Sports. At the time, Daryl Morey was running the show, with Elton Brand as his second in command. Since Gansey and Jameer Nelson took over, the August ranking suddenly dropped to No. 14. The reason, of course, wasn’t glossed over.
There are bad front offices who can have great offseasons. Morey has done it before with the Sixers, just to find himself fired years later. The 76ers undoubtedly had a great offseason on paper, but the Jaylen Brown trade was compared to the Los Angeles Lakers’ steal of a deal, which landed them Luka Doncic two years ago. The trade was great, but essentially fell into the Lakers’ lap. Sam Quinn of CBS Sports sees the Jaylen Brown deal as a similar situation. And because of that trade, the Sixers had enough interest from LeBron James to land him on a ridiculously low contract price.
It’s clearly going to take some time before the Sixers’ front office lands the title of one of the best. They are simply too fresh to get within the top 10 after one draft and one free agency run. Of course, that won’t change Sixers fans’ views of the summer, which clearly has instilled championship hopes in the City of Brotherly Love.
The deals that made the blockbuster summer
Thanks to one of Morey’s infamous trades, where the Sixers cut ties with Jared McCain, Philadelphia had a first-round draft pick in 2026. They took on Labaron Philon, who will fight for a backup guard spot for the upcoming season.
When free agency fired up, the Sixers added Dean Wade as their first signing. The guard Anfernee Simons was added shortly after. It took most of July to lure in LeBron James, but the Sixers successfully picked up the veteran forward after he considered a handful of options, including the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Miami Heat.
It could be the start of a career-defining offseason for Gansey, who might turn the 76ers’ front office into one of the league’s best. He’ll get his proper credit for the last few months, but there is still plenty of work to do to move up this list.
