The Philadelphia 76ers might feel the weight of more pressure than anybody else in the league going into the 2026-2027 NBA season. That comes with the territory of adding stars like LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.
Feeling that kind of pressure, it’s easy to fall into a trap of having self-doubt. As expectations in the NBA rarely pan out perfectly, the 76ers could flop just as easily as they could win it all. Experience isn’t everything in a title-winning team, but it is important. That’s why the 76ers added two champions to the roster after another second-round flameout.
Nobody needs to give LeBron James any reminders about who he is and what he’s done at this stage of his career. Being heavily involved in GOAT conversations, with several titles on his resume, LeBron truly has nothing left to prove. Bob Myers, the President of the Sixers’ ownership group HBSE, sees Brown in a slightly different light.
Brown might not need a reminder about who he is and what he’s done, but he’s got one.
Bob Myers delivers an important message for the one-time champ
“We needed an edge, and I think Jaylen Brown sets an edge,” Myers said on the Cousins podcast with Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady. He also went into detail about a conversation the president and the All-Star forward had recently. Myers urged Brown not to underestimate his status as an NBA champion going into his first season with the Sixers.
“‘Don’t ever underestimate that you are a champion. And that there is power in that, so use that with this team.’ And I said, we need you to lead, so I’m going to ask you to lead,” Myers said, recalling his talk with Brown.
That’s a message for everybody else on the team, as much as it’s a message for Brown. With so many high-profile names on the roster, the biggest questions became about who is going to lead the offense with the ball in their hands and who is going to be the voice of the team. Each Sixers star understands that it’s a team game and sacrifices will need to be made. The same mindset works for the leadership aspect as well, but Brown will have a chance to come in as the new guy and quickly establish himself in a role that trade pickups don’t always pick up right away—especially when homegrown stars are already in place.
Brown has certainly earned that right. The 29-year-old might’ve spent his entire 674-game career with the Boston Celtics, competing as a Sixers rival, but his resume speaks for itself. Five All-Star appearances, two All-NBA Second Team nods, and an NBA Finals MVP should be enough for Brown’s peers to listen when he’s in leadership mode.
