Kevin Love, who was previously LeBron James' co-star back in his second stint with the Cavaliers, is reportedly looking at the Philadelphia 76ers before calling it quits. But as nostalgic as that may sound, the idea simply makes no sense for the team at this point in time. As such, the front office should not even entertain his interest in reuniting with The King.
Love, who is closing in on his 38th birthday, remains unsigned in the free agency market –– and there are good reasons why. While he is a highly respected veteran who has made a lot of All-Star teams in the past and was a key part of the Cavs' championship run in 2016, he is way past his prime and can no longer provide anything new to the table for the 76ers.
The 76ers should not even entertain the idea of adding Kevin Love to the roster
There are a slew of reasons as to why the 76ers have no business even wanting Love to come to them. First, the front office is technically not even capable of bringing him in unless they waive one of their players. Otherwise, they will have to wait until December to sign him (or any other player in that regard) due to cap limitations.
More importantly, though, what value can the 18-year veteran really add to the team at this point in his career? Sure, his rebounding and three-point shooting can be attractive facets to install into the team's big man rotation, but the 76ers already have those. Adem Bona, Ariel Hukporti, and Jabari Walker are very capable rebounders. Dean Wade was brought in to bring spot-up shooting and defensive versatility.
Aside from his past connection with LeBron, the thought piece of ushering in Love is simply a thing to feed nostalgia. There are hardly any basketball reasons to sign him, which is probably why reports seem to indicate that it is the veteran himself which is pushing for this partnership to happen.
Love is a good veteran to have given his ample experience, especially in the playoffs. However, it is not like this 76ers squad is littered with unproven players. If anything, this team is already built to make a deep playoff run and withstand whatever turmoil awaits them.
For now, at the very least, the 76ers should steer clear of Love. He might be LeBron's former sidekick, but that is far from enough for the front office to go through the necessary lengths just to bring him in.
