76ers have a familiar Nick Nurse replacement that makes too much sense

The Philadelphia 76ers are just one loss away from getting handed another early elimination in the playoffs to officially end their campaign. As a consequence, the franchise could also very well be on the verge of making a game-changing shift in the coming offseason by potentially calling it quits with head coach Nick Nurse.

Nurse has his own, vivid faults from a coaching standpoint dating back to his first season in Philly during the 2023-24 campaign, but for the most part, any and all misfortunes that have wreaked havoc on the franchise since then are not entirely attributable to him. Still, as everyone knows with how things work in the modern NBA, coaches are usually the scapegoat when a team struggles, and there are no signs that the 76ers are too edgy not to subscribe to that trend.

If the 76ers do end up firing Nurse this offseason, there is one obvious and familiar name they should already have circled on their whiteboard –– Sam Cassell. The longtime assistant coach has always been considered for head coaching openings in the league, and it is high time for him to get the nod as a head tactician once and for all.

The 76ers should primarily target Sam Cassell if they fire Nick Nurse this summer

Cassell is actually a familiar face in Philadelphia, having served as a the lead assistant coach for the team when Doc Rivers was still at the helm. He eventually left the franchise right when Rivers was let go, and since then, he has been serving as one of the most highly valued assistants in the league for the Celtics.

A heady guard who spent 16 years in the NBA as a player, Cassell brings with him a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the game. Even better, he has an established reputation of building strong rapport with and developing backcourt cogs –– something the 76ers would treasure with Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe leading them.

Cassell is a highly sensible coach who has an uncanny skill of helping the locker room become a steady ship. Celtics fans have savored the way he has offered a nice contrast to Joe Mazzulla's no-nonsense approach by being the voice of reason on the sidelines, and that is a specific facet that would bode well in Philly where there are a lot of established voices and strong personality.

For those reasons, the 76ers will be better off going after Sam Cassell if they do part ways with Nick Nurse. While there are more tenured alternatives, a fresh voice like the longtime veteran should go a long way toward a soft reset.
